From Dublin to Cork

In our first day in Dublin, we explored Trinity College as well as the National Museum, where we saw expeditions on prehistoric Ireland, Viking Ireland and Ireland’s gold. From there we ventured to the National Library, where we furthered our knowledge on W.B. Yeats. In the afternoon the students were free to explore the Grafton Street and Temple Bar areas. After a day in Dublin City, the students had evening class with Niamh and talked about more current Irish issues.

Thursday we went back into Dublin to O’Connell and Henry Streets and the General Post Office. The majority of the students saw the newest Harry Potter movie, with costumes and all!

On Friday we visited Kilmainham Gaol where we learned more about the prisoners held there and its connection to the Easter Uprising of 1916. After returning to King’s Hospital to freshen up and put on our “smart” clothes, we visited the house of the President of Ireland. Unfortunately the President was vacationing, but we enjoyed tea and a tour of her entertaining rooms. Shannon got quite the opportunity of a lifetime: playing a song on the President’s Steinway piano! In the evening the students put the finishing touches on their drama performances which they will perform in Cork on Sunday evening.

We arrived in Cork this evening after a great few days in Dublin. On our way we stopped at the Rock of Cashel to enjoy the heritage site and stretch our legs. Next stop was Cobh to visit the Annie Moore statue and explore the coastal city. This evening, after checking into our accommodations in Cork, we went to Kinsale for a teen music festival and listened to Irish bands. Needless to say, it’s been quite a week!

Glendalough

We continued on our day trip to Glendalough, a monastery started by Saint Kevin. On the grounds, we explored the area surrounding two lakes including wooded trails and waterfalls. Students were able to appreciate the historical significance of the site as well as the natural beauty.

When we arrived back to campus, students worked in groups to develop skits about historical Irish figures. After group meetings, we joined Niamh for another Irish history class, where we discussed famine and emigration, as well as the Easter Rising of 1916.

The Irish Way students learn about the Stone of Destiny, which high kings used to test their royal validity... believers say the stone spoke a worthy king's name!

Tuesday morning, we departed for a day trip from Dublin. The first stop was the Hill of Tara, a the location from which the high kings of Ireland ruled. Many rituals and burials took place on the grounds, making it a significant place in Irish history.

Our drive from the Carrick-a-Rede Bridge to Dublin was several hours, but students were entertained by an open mic joke-telling session aboard the bus. Hosts Darby and Justan encouraged participants to provide a little comic relief, which made for an entertaining journey.

Monday morning, we boarded the bus to bid farewell to Bundoran and the Donegal Adventure Center team. After a few hours, we arrived at Giants Causeway, a unique geological rock formation in Northern Ireland, where students explored the geometrically shaped terrain. We also strolled along the cliffs for amazing views.

Yesterday, our group went on a hike through soggy fields and up scenic ridges. We had to watch our step, as much of the moss-covered terrain was blanketed bog land. Everyone got their feet wet, but the views were stunning, and we all left with a new appreciation for the ecology of the area. What a place!

Several students took a workshop with counselor Noreen to learn how to crochet, as well as how crocheting came to Ireland as a means to provide income during the famine. Families crocheted intricate designs as luxury goods. After quickly catching onto the craft and crocheting over the past few days, we have several headbands and a couple of scarves completed!

On our third attempt to watch the sunset over the water (the first two times it was rainy and grey) we caught a spectacular and colorful end to the day... we all agreed it was amazing!

After Abbey Mass Rock, we walked down to St. Patrick's Well, where people come to observe the Immaculate Conception each year on August 15 by standing in the blessed waters. Near the well is a prayer tree where people tie things to the branches to signify a prayer.

... we've been having a blast! Over the past few days, we've been cliffjumping in Donegal Bay, visiting W.B. Yeats' grave in Drumcliffe, and taking in traditional Irish dancing in Bunduran. What fun!!! Keep in mind that all of these activities have taken place with incredible scenery all around. Yeats' beloved Ben Bulben mountain seems to follow us as we explore the region. Another highlight from yesterday was our trip to the Glencar waterfall, an incredible sight that Yeats sought out for serenity. Enjoy our photos!

We headed into the town of Donegal this morning, catching a glimpse of what life in a 17th Century Irish castle was really like. Following the 'Flight of the Earls' in the 1600's, the Brooks family moved into the castle and lived quite the life. The tour provided students with detailed accounts of royal life and insights into how a castle was designed.

Sunday morning Irish Way classes with Niamh focused on the arrival of St. Patrick and Christianity to Ireland. To wrap up class, we sang some lively Irish songs, including Wild Rover, Belfast Girl and Molly Malone.

After class, we broke into teams and used various materials to build boats. Dressed in wet suits, students competed to see who could row fastest across a small pool... but all the boats sank. To overcome this obstacle, students swam with their boats to the finish line!

In the evening, we were introduced to rock climbing and abseiling (repelling). Anna and James even climbed the wall blindfolded!

In the afternoon we went to experience first hand about ancient burials and tombs (topics from the class) as we traveled to Carrowmore, a megalithic burial ground. Some of the tombs date back to 500 years before the pyramids.

After dinner, we pulled on the wet suits and learned how to surf! Even though when we got off of the bus it was pouring rain, those planning to learn participated in the lesson on the beach and got into the water. Luckily the weather soon cleared up after hitting the water and we had some very successful first time surfers. Everyone agreed that this was an exciting way to celebrate the Fourth of July.

To continue the 4th of July celebration, we used a portable grill and celebrated with hot dogs and sparklers!

Today, we had our first class in Bundoran, learning about Irish history dating back to 4000 B.C. We learned about Celtic tribes and the role of each tribe member. Also, we discussed the origins of many of our Irish names before joining Niamh and Justan in singing both traditional and modern Irish songs.

Today, we said farewell to Galway and made our way to Bundoran, County Donegal, where we met our Irish teacher, Niamh. After introducing ourselves and settling into our new accommodations, we had lunch and a tour of the local area. Being flexible with the Irish weather, we cut our tour short due to some rain... which soon cleared into sunshine! We're off to our first dinner in Bundoran, followed by some evening athletic games.

Today we went to Kylemore Abbey and explored the grounds there. We stopped at the Connemara Marble factory for a tour of the marble/jewelry making process. The students then went into Galway with their drama groups to research a famous person in Irish history. They will be performing a skit towards the end of our time in Ireland on that person. After successful research sessions, we ate dinner and listened to traditional Irish music. Shannon showed her Irish dancing skills to all! We are off to Donegal tomorrow in the morning.

Dia dhuit! This morning we had our first class, a lecture by John Eastlake on Irish Literature. He focused on literature from the west of Ireland and Aran Islands. The students also learned several phrases in Gaelic. After the lecture, John walked us to the oldest part of the NUI campus and then back to our bus for a packed lunch. Then Joe (our bus driver/tour guide) took us on a walking tour of Galway- through the Cathedral, the Spanish Arch, and Shop street.

Today we went to Inishmore on a 10:30am ferry and rented bikes to explore the island. The students were free to bike around as they wished, but everyone met at Dun Aengus for pictures and lunch. Later when we got back to Galway, the group ventured out for dinner at the Galway Bakery Center. After dinner, counselor Katie and 5 students (Heather, Katie, Derek, Brigid, and Ellie) went to see the show Trad and the Prom, a show full of Irish dancing, singing, and music. The rest of the students explored Galway with counselors Noreen and Justan.

Well the Irish Way has happily landed in Ireland and with no lost luggage. We stopped at the Cliffs of Moher on the way from the airport and got some great pictures (which will be posted later tonight). Our next stop was at Dan O'Hara's Homestead which included lunch, a tour, and horseshoe and tug of war competitions. We're here now in Galway- showered and unpacked- and ready for some icebreakers and games before heading to bed early!

We have arrived at the Glen Eagles Hotel in Killarney, where the Irish Way is staying in apartments for the remainder of our time in Ireland. The kids all settled in with their new roommates, hosting dinner parties for one another. While in Killarney, the group tours different places in Kerry each day leaving Thursday, our last day, as time to pack and tie up loose ends.

Yesterday, we woke up to a constant rain. We have been fortunate enough that this was the only day of steady rain that our group encountered since our trip began, but it did spoil some of our plans. The students were brave enough to run from store to store as we made a stop in Dingle. After that, we forged on to the cultural heritage center for the Blasket Islands. These islands are no longer inhabited but once had up to 200 residents living on them at one time. The islands are most famous for their use of Gaelic language and for the amount of writers and storytellers to have lived or been inspired by them. From the museum on the mainland, we could just make out the shape of the islands through the fog. Even though the rain wasn't ideal, the beautiful green of the countryside was made even more vivid by the precipitation.

The weather today was gorgeous and our group made our way through an abridged version of the famed Ring of Kerry. We stopped in the small town of Kenmere, where we visited the site of a historic stone ring where sacrificed were preformed in pagan times. After meditating in a circle around the stones, our students explored the open air market in the town, buying jewelry and crepes. Next stop was Killarney National Park, where we went on a quick hike. With our calves burning, we watched a waterfall and snapped photos. We finished the day with a trip to the Muckrus House, the home and grounds of an English land lord that have been preserved by the state. We were all impressed with the magnitude of the house and the beauty of the gardens. Sadly, that was our last tour in Ireland. The sing-alongs, the scenery and the 'craic' will all be missed.

Tonight, the Irish Way group got all dolled up to see Riverdance. We gathered outside the Gaiety Theatre to take pictures and enjoy the mild Dublin night. The kids were especially excited for this night after all their Irish step dance classes this month. With this newfound appreciation, even those students who had seen the show before found it impressive. One of our stand-out dancers, Cody Z., commented that there was a uniqueness to seeing Riverdance in its hometown. After the show, our group hit up the McDonalds on Grafton Street. Connor and Kayt got into the spirit of Grafton, setting out a cap and doing a Spanish dance for spare change.

Today, we visited Kilmainham Gaol, the infamous jail where many Irish rebels were held. In the later half of the 20^th century, this jail was falling into disrepair and was initially restored by volunteer tradesmen who did not want to see the history of their country disappear. On our tour, the students explored the jail cells of Eamon DeValera and Charles Parnell in addition to the execution yard where the leaders of the 1916 Rising were shot. We also saw the chapel where Joseph Plunkett and his wife, Grace, were married 15 minutes before his execution. The dark history of the jail is still palpable and most of the kids came out of this experience with shocked expressions. Still, this is one of the most important historical stops we make on our sightseeing tour of the country. The rest of the day was filled with free-time in the city. Some students took a bus tour, others went to the Dublin Writers Museum and others took the time to explore St. Steven’s Green. Meghan McGuire said that she loves Dublin, especially the cobblestone streets and Temple Bar.

7/26-27

This weekend saw our last day of classes. While the kids all agreed that they would rather not be in school in the summer, they did enjoy their Irish-focused studies. Cody L. said his favourite class was literature with Angie. He liked how the course was structured to give the biographies of the writers along with samples of their work. Meghan F. thought that Taryn’s class was perfect for the program because it answered all of random questions she had, like: how hard is it to get Irish citizenship?

With their notebooks turned in, the students spent much of the weekend preparing for their drama group presentations. The students are broken up into 8 groups and assigned historical or mythical Irish figures to research. Earlier in the trip, counsellors Pete and Norah organized a limerick contest, where each student had to write a limerick on their historical figure. Moira won the contest with this limerick:

Of a firing squad’s sharp shot!

Whether her group wins the whole drama competition remains to be seen. The students will present their creative plays and acts tonight!

Today, the Irish Way had the privilege of visiting the Irish President's house in Phoenix Park. While walking the grounds, many of the students commented on the 'royal' cows and the beauty of the place. Meghan described the house as 'extravagant' and Betsey followed up by saying it was 'quite lovely with delicious biscuits and jam.' We were shown around the state rooms of the house which included the historical cabinet table of DeValera and furniture from King Louis XXIV.

After this once-in-a-lifetime experience, our students were given a free afternoon in Dublin city center. Most chose to shop, like Barbara, Ali and Julie who all bought matching Claddah rings, or they went to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College. Others wandered down to the fashionable Temple Bar area, to explore the cafes and vintage stores. Megan B. came back on the bus, raving 'Dublin has replaced NYC as one of my top cities!'

We ended our day with two workshops taught by our Irish teachers, Dan and Angie. Dan lead a rugby session, something that an experienced player like John was looking forward to. Although our kids weren't completely able to grasp the rules of the game, they had fun trying. After that, all of our students attended a Northern Ireland workshop, where they learned about the recent conflict and the current realities of the region. Mary Kate found Angie's personal perspective on the issue to be the most rewarding part of this experience. Our group politician, Sam, said 'the Northern Ireland workshop highlighted how the colonialism and imperialism of the British government oppressed the world!' Frenchie was speechless, saying only, 'ditto.'

Our Northern Ireland Workshop was well timed, as today we headed up to the North to see the Giant's Causeway. The scenery between the North and the South remained largely unchanged and the beauty of this area was as breathtaking as areas in the Burren. On the causeway, we hiked the cliffs and debated the mythical and scientific reasonings behind this natural wonder. We then headed to the Carrick-a-rede bridge, a suspension bridge that connects the mainland to a fishing island off the coast. Rachel was proud of her self for crossing the bridge no-handed. The views of the sea and distant Scotland left many of our students stunned. Molly said that the beauty of these places made it her favorite day yet!

Today was our first full day in Galway. After settling into their apartments, the kids all agreed that they loved the set up of Gort Na Corrib much more than Newtown Boarding School. Our time in Galway is packed full with tours and we started our stint in the West off with a visit to the Cliffs of Moher. This is one of the most beautiful and famous places in Ireland. As we left Galway City, we passed through the Burren of Co. Clare. This area is most known for its exposed limestone and lush greenery. We stopped at an ancient dolmen, a burial site that pre-dates the Pyramids! Legend has it that if you run around the stone structure 10 times anti-clockwise, you increase your fertility. Most of the Irish Way-ers gave it a shot, sprinting around the tomb.

At the Cliffs of Moher, the students all snapped photos and took in the beauty of the scene. Colleen felt like she was 'looking into the end of the earth' as she gazed across the Atlantic Ocean. The dark blues and greens of the sea amazed even those who had visited this dramatic landmark before.

Back in Galway, the kids were all given freetime to explore the city. With the Galway Arts Festival going on in July, the city is at its most vibrant. Mary loved the street performers and many of our students bought authentic Claddagh rings at the original site of their creation.

Today we got an early start and headed to the ferry docks. From there, we were off to Inishmore, the biggest of the three Aran Islands. These islands are known for preserving many of the traditional ways of Irish life, such as fishing, stone houses and the Gaelic language. Once off the boat, we all rolled up one leg of our pants in preparation for a day of cycling. This proved a daunting task for Mariel and TJ who both had never ridden bikes before! Either riding tandem or solo, the group headed uphill to explore the island. One of the greatest attractions on Inishmore is Dun Aengus, a ring fort situated at the highest peak of the island. Once we mounted the top, most students thought the uphill climb was worth it. Unlike the Cliffs of Moher, Dun Angus has no barriers on the edge of the cliff, so students were able to peak their heads over the cliffs to get an even closer glimpse of the drastic drop below. While Molly claims that the island seemed to be uphill both ways, the lack of rain made the trip that much better!

7/18

Today we headed to Connemara to see a typical homestead of an Irish tenant farmer. We took a tour of the grounds, learning how to dig peat and also playing games of horseshoes and tug-of-war. Patty came out of the day as the horseshoe champion. As he accepted his title he said 'yeah I could get used to living here.' The only problem might be the short ceilings and door frames. Dan O'Hara's cottage gave all of us a unique glimpse into traditional Irish life. Many of us were sad to leave Galway, but there are more fun times ahead in Dublin.

7/10:

Today was our first field trip day and it was jam packed with stops in Cobh, Blarney, Cork City and Youghal (pronounced "y'all"). Cobh is a port town in county Cork, where many of the "coffin ships" bound for America set sail. Our students learned about the horrid conditions of these famine ships in a cultural heritage museum associated with the IACI. Cody Zimmer took over 100 photos in that one stop alone!

Next, we set off for Blarney where our students all kissed the Blarney Stone in hopes of getting the "gift of the gab," the ability to talk themselves out of sticky situations. They loved the chance to explore the castle grounds and stock up on Aran sweaters at the Blarney Wollen Mills. Colleen said this was an ideal way to celebrate her 15th birthday!

Now with a bus full of talkative kids, we made our way into Cork City, the second largest city in Ireland. We took a few hours to eat and shop in this busy city, but all this was cut short by an intense rainstorm. While some kids complained that they were drenched, Stephen still maintains that this is his favorite memory of the trip thus far. We then ended our day at the coast-line town of Youghal. This town not only has gorgeous sea-side views, but it is also the place where Sir Walter Raleigh first introduced the potato to Ireland in the 1600s.

7/11:

Today was another class day with a major focus on the history and effects of the Potato Famine. After lunch, we had a GAA workshop where local Gaelic sportsmen taught our students hurling and Gaelic football. Most of the kids laughed their way through the drills and found their coaches to be "good craic" (a lot of fun!). We ended our night with a talent show, where the counselors were blown away by the talent of these Irish Way-ers. Patrick brought out his bag-pipes, Steven and Kayt read their poetry and John showed us his improv skills.

7/12:

Today was another travel day with stops at the Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny. The students overwhelmingly enjoyed their time in Kilkenny, a busy medieval city. Kate and Alexa agreed that the shopping was great. Trisha was equally impressed with the "legit Irish food" and the beauty of Kilkenny castle. The castle, built in the 13th century, was owned by the Butler family until it was sold to the Republic of Ireland for $50 in the mid-20th century. The original windows and the Butler art collection, displayed on the top floor of the castle, caught the students' attention.

Once we arrived back at our boarding school, the students had fun with an evening scavenger hunt. Thanks to the incredible amount of light in Ireland this time of year, they were able to explore the town of Waterford, taking pictures of local architecture and finding four-leaf clovers. Moira and Jenna spent 45 minutes crawling around a local park, in search of a good luck clover. Our winning team was Annie, Stephen, Ray, Emily and Patrick's group with the record-breaking time of 49 minutes!

7/13:

We started our day with an Irish breakfast fry with eggs, sausage, bacon and tomatoes. Most of the kids were happy with how delicious and authentic our meal was. We then headed down the road to the Waterford Crystal factory. On the way we had a sing-along, jamming out to Bon Jovi, Journey and traditional Irish tunes. The students were impressed with the precision and skill of the glass-cutters. Eileen helped to make a vase and many of our kids bought gifts for friends and family at home.

We then spent the rest of the afternoon in Tramore, a sea-side town known for its amusement park and beach. Annie described the town as "California/ Florida style" and while the students love to immerse themselves in the Irish culture, they enjoyed the American-ness of Tramore. This was an especially great day for Kate Vaughn, who went into the ocean for the first time! The fun continued when we arrived back in Waterford with the Counselor Olympics. Through the egg-spoon races and water balloon tosses, one team emerged victorious. Representing James Joyce, Meghan, Kaytlin, Colleen, Mary, Sam and Cody Lynch celebrated their win (and not getting soaked by the balloons!).

Cries of "watch my feet!" rang out of the Newtown Boarding School gym, as our Irish Way group had their first Irish step dance class. This time-honored and often embarrassing tradition is one of the most treasured of the Irish Way experience. Counselor Aileen led a fun class, with lots of giggling among the students. Some of our more experienced dancers like Clare and Mary Kate, were able to help the others in their 3s and 7s. After class was over, Ali proclaimed the half-hour "culturally expanding." Hey everybody! My name is Pete Ford and I am one of the Irish Way Counselors this summer. I am twenty-two years old and I just finished college with honors with a degree in English. I am originally from Pennsylvania and have just moved back from Chatham, NJ. I grew up in a family of Irish dancers and competed for several years before hanging up my kilt. My dancing technique of late has been refered to as "foolish," "laughable," "embarrassingly heartfelt." I play a whole bunch of instruments, but I am primarily a banjo and guitar player. I will be teaching a workshop on Irish-American music and hopefully get some creative writing activities in there too. I went on the program in 2002 and cried when I got back to the states. I probably don't need to bring that up. Well, I cannot wait to meet everybody because this is going to be an amazing trip.

Last day of classes! The formal teaching portion finished today with books packed up and boards wiped down. The syllabus on the last day of classes covered as usual, a broad range of topics. Some include the role of the media in Ireland –Irish Studies, Frank O’Connor –Irish literature and the 1916 Rising –Irish history. Irish-American History Teacher, Kevin Mason, described the experience in saying that “the caliber of students was very high, we generated a lot of relevant discussion as well as Irish-American affairs, past and present. There was particularly good insight on the British occupation of Northern Ireland.”. The students equally enjoyed Kevin’s class, “Kevin is very enthusiastic about his work; you can tell he’s a really good teacher,” said Sean Roberts. As well, Meghan Butler said, “I really, really enjoyed the classes; the last day was bittersweet because it meant that our time together and the program was coming to a close!”

The afternoon was packed with workshops, beginning with ‘Songs of Resistance’ led by Kevin. This was a huge crowd pleaser! “It was great, we analyzed songs and drew pictures showing our interpretation of the lyrics and music” said Sean Roberts. Nici McCrary who chose the song ‘Roddy McCorey’ added, “I just can’t wait to get the CD we made! I’d never heard the actual song, though I’d heard of it in conjunction with the culture”. Later, the rugby workshop was led by Brendan MacCauley a past coordinator for the Irish Way who seemingly can’t get enough! He found his way back to us and spent the day at King’s Hospital. Thankfully the rain held out and the fields were dry enough to unleash some of the true Rugger Buggers at heart. It was a fierce game and once the rules and basic skills were mastered the competition was top notch. Mike Blatti may now be a superfan for life, “I loved the workshop –anything with sports and me always works. There’s a semi-pro team at home, I think I’ll try and play!”

Riverdance at last! Dressed to the nines we loaded the coaches and headed into the city center for the evening’s entertainment. Shown in the Gaiety, an old Victorian theater at the top of Grafton Street the night was a real treat and it exceeded any and all expectations, “I don’t think words exist in the human language to try and describe the experience of Riverdance! I loved the mix of traditional and world dance, it really showed the impact of dance, Irish dance throughout the world” said Nicholas Comeaux. The show chronicled the life and times of the Irish people and touched upon a number of topics, events, myths and truths about Ireland through the ages. Adrian Cole said, “It was great music, I really got into it! The funny part is that I’m convinced we listened to the same song for two hours –but it never got old!” Many had seen the show before but there is always something fresh about it. In the years since it began as a ten minute piece filling time in the intermission of the Eurovision Song Contest it has had a huge impact on the art of Irish dance and its place in the world. Michelle Rickley was especially enthusiastic upon leaving the theater, “Riverdance was sick! We got to sit in a box! I loved the hip hop, I think I fell in love with the one wearing white, they were so funky! It reminded me of home and NYC”. Thanks to Corinna’s dance lessons the students had a level of knowledge which made it even more impressive. Katlin Van Vorst said, “I was overwhelmed with excitement; my dance teacher was the star! And we had box seats, it totally set the mood”. One quote from the narrative sums up the theme of the show: “With song and dance we gift and mourn our children, we send them across the ocean with song and dance”. And the city was buzzing as we headed back to the bus, there was loads of excitement in seeing Dublin all lit up!

A long awaited free day in Dublin was enjoyed by everyone! We all spent hours exploring what the city has to offer, museums, castles, cathedrals, and shops of course! For most the first order of business was a stop at an internet café. And once the emails were checked and Facebooks were updated it was off to discover The Big Smoke. “I really like Dublin! I’d been there once before when I was younger so it was really nice to see it again. We had a great day and had time to read in the park; even though it rained a little it was great!” said Amalia Herasme. Dublin has been described as “delightful, decadent and totally down to earth” but it is also known that what makes this place is the people. Keegan Wallace picked up on their wit and sarcasm straight away and could pass for a local at this point! “Today was my favorite day! I had an ice cream at an outdoor café –it was delectable! The people are really friendly, but don’t ask for directions!” said Keegan. Getting the time to see the details Elizabeth Borah explored a few of the parks as well, “I was so excited to see the Oscar Wilde statue, he is my favorite; ‘The Importance of being Earnest’ is just the best!” The night concluded with a disco back at King’s Hospital along with the Italian, Spanish and Irish students also staying on the campus. A bunch of the girls went retro and were dressed to impress in their throwback garb, “we requested 80s music and Maureen did our makeup!” said Katlin Van Vorst. Fun!

The drama groups went from preparation to presentation and spent the day rehearsing and finalizing the last of the props and skits. The skits were varied in format and content but entertaining nonetheless! Most importantly everyone had a laugh, “by the last day we all just let it hang loose, everybody was having fun so it didn’t matter about being silly up on stage!” Moreover we all got to learn a little bit more about a few of the icons in Irish mythology and history, ancient and contemporary. The winning group who presented James Joyce will be treated to a night of music next week during the Galway Arts Festival!

Arrived in Galway! Mick Kavanagh and Brian Farrell will be guiding us about the west of Ireland for the next few days and have loads of excitement in store! We will miss Dublin but there is huge anticipation for the good times in store in Galway! “It’s a great day to be Irish!” says Mick our coach driver.

Sunday, July 21st cliffs of Moher, Burren

Galway city has always attracted a creative crowd and we fit right in! We are lucky to be in Galway now as this week is the annual Arts Festival. Mike Brown gives the city his approval, “although Dublin wasn’t exactly what I was expecting I enjoyed it. But Galway is great! I find it ironic as a city –it’s just so chill and laid back! There are so many street performers!” And in general, the landscape is becoming more and more familiar; it seems we are all getting used to the Irish land, “I want a cow in my front yard! I live in the city, it’ll be so weird going home and not seeing any grass” said Katlin Van Vorst.

The first day of tours brought us out to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, both in County Clare. The Cliffs of Moher is one of Ireland’s most famous sights recognized the world over on postcards or in frames. The day was spectacular, clear and stayed dry while we were at the cliffs (for the most part!). From the top we were able to see Connemara and the Aran Islands, two of our future destinations. What a great view! As described by Ginny Halpin, “the cliffs were reflecting in the crystal blue waters, they got into my soul”. “This is my favorite place in the whole world! I was here four years ago and it was even better this time, my second time around” said Katlin Van Vorst. Shea Connell loved the cliffs and said “they had the best ice cream ever!” On another note Julia Burns added, “It was the stuff postcards are made of! I got goose bumps looking over the edge. The water crashing against the cliff walls –it looked like a romance novel… the only thing missing was Fabio!”

Before we got soaked on the way to the bus we had loads of time to settle into the Burren. The Irish term ‘Boireann’ literally means rocky place, quite the understatement! “The expanse of grey limestone whispered the sounds of past travelers, the whole place is just eerie!” said Maureen McNulty. The region stretches across northern Clare and its acres of silvery limestone were the site of ancient burial chambers. Burke Kearney sees the Burren as “quite an amazing geological phenomenon –and it made for a comfortable seat!”

Everyone had free time this evening and it was another mission to the supermarket. The townhouse style flats (recently refurbished!) in Gort na Corrib are self-catering and so meals have been something of an adventure. Dinners have been lavish and the culinary skills are very impressive!

Monday, July 22nd

Day two of tours! Connemara is immediately northwest of Galway city and is a Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) region. It is perhaps the most stunning of landscapes characterized by a patchwork of “rusty bogs, lonely valleys, pare grey mountains and small black lakes that shimmer in the sun”. Coach drivers Mick and Brian are well practiced in the area and did as much justice to the area as is possible. From the rows of the two coaches we had 85 of the best seats in the house, as Britney Weimar, “at one point on the journey I looked out the windows and realized, oh my gosh, there are mountains on all sides of me!” Mike Brown added, “I remember waking up at one point when we were on the bus and all of a sudden I woke up looking at a mountain and a lake and I just thought… wow”. We stopped off for lunch in Connemara National Park and had loads of time to wander about. Katlin Van Vorst said, “The best place was the National Park, we went on a hike and posed by an abandoned cottage –it was so artsy!” Cara Scriven described it saying, “Connemara is really pretty and green and the mountains were breathtaking, it left me in awe!”

The next stop was the Dan O’Hara Farm. The tour guide Martin was a classic character and he showed us the ropes as we piled into two tractors for a tour of the area. Up the mountain we explored the bogs and learned all about the process. Patrick Hayes said, “I was so captivated by the tractor ride that the horse dung didn’t even bother me!” And Julia Burns added, “I was entranced by the reenactment of a man bogging for peat; it was so nifty touching something that is 2000 years old!” We were able to go into the cottage and Martin relayed all the information painting a picture of the Famine and its effect on the area. Then it was all about the traditional outdoor activities of the time: tug of war and horseshoe tosses! Let’s just say we got down and dirty.

Staff counselor Adrienne Reuss said it was one of her very favorite days, “just when you think there couldn’t be anything else as breathtaking as what you’ve already seen, something else comes along to sweep you off your feet once again and you are humbled even more”. On the journey home the microphone on one of the coaches was captured by a rascal student, Fiona Rada. The singsong came to a halt as Fiona entertained, Patrick Hayes said, “Mick and Fiona are the perfect team! I’m glad I stayed away from the mic though, she was brutal on the interviews!” Laugh a minute!

Back at the ranch in time for some free time in the city, again the main destination was the supermarket! We are all loving Gort na Corrib and as our time comes to a close the self-titled sister rooms are trying to squeeze the fun out of every hour possible, “sleeping feels like a waste of time!”

We were competing for the worms this morning as we rose for a 9am departure to the Aran Islands! We sailed on a 10am ferry out to Inishmor, the largest of the three islands. A short ferry ride threw us back in time as we arrived on the sublime island; we collected our bikes straight away, packed lunches and bathing suits in toe! Inishmor is an extension of the same limestone that forms the Burren and it is surely evident. The winding roads made for quite the workout as we cycled through and around the island! The students had the chance to put their Irish into practice as Inishmor is a Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) region. “We learned a few new words from the students camping in the Irish college” Maureen McNulty. The paths brought us through small pastures and fields lined with rocky stone walls and peppered with limestone; there was even something friendly about the horses! “We went on a horse drawn cart and Sean our driver was the best! He brought us nearly all around the island; we could see the Cliffs of Moher across the water! He was hilarious and just such fun!” Kara Erb. The black sand beaches were magnificent; a bunch of us braved the cold Atlantic! Admittedly it took a running start and a lot of revving up. Mainland Ireland and the Connemara mountains across the water was the perfect backdrop for fun at the beach.

A main destination is out on the western side of the island where the dramatic cliffs are perfectly vertical and you can get right up to the edge! Just there is a stone fort called Dun Aengus which is one of the oldest archeological remains in Ireland and arguably the most amazing archaeological site. Any of us could have stayed out there all day listening to the Atlantic crashing against the cliff walls but we had to catch the last ferry back to Rossaveal in Galway. The bicycles took us out, around and back again, such fun but tiring! The journey home was a quiet one, windswept hair and pink shoulders, we were exhausted!

It was a perfect day to end the tours. D’Arcy Hearn said, “Biking around the island was really amazing! We met the cutest little old man, he was so nice! And he had a basket of potatoes on the front of his bike!” Everyone enjoyed the afternoon on the Aran Islands and we lucked out with the weather once again! Emily Drennan said, “It was so beautiful! We were biking along with the beaches on one side and farms on the other…” and Deirdre Engel added that “the beaches on the island had the best seashells in the whole world!”

July 25th 2007

The last full day of Irish Way 2007 was reserved as a free day in Galway city! Students were up and down the High Street combing the length and breadth of the city for that last gift to bring back home. There was background music coming from the street performing ‘buskers’ and a rich history built up from the cobbles. Everyone enjoyed their day in the city center, but arriving back in Gort na Corrib meant tying up loose ends, cleaning and packing up before the final banquet!

We were all decked out as we climbed up the steps of the coaches. Escorted to our final banquet by Mick and Brian, legendary coach drivers, there was a different kind of buzz in the air. And en route to our destination for a night of dinner and dancing Ryan Raines summed up our shared experience, “As all journeys come to an end, there is always that chance, that one chance that we’ll all come back here and see each other again. All the counselors taught us great things during our time in Ireland, even though it was short. But all of us have learned so much in the great experience that we will now take forward, from being on this trip. We realized that there is a real world out there…”
